We are now in our third year of active commissioning and the third commissioning budget cycle with several years to go before the full benefits of the reform are realised by 2030.
We are pleased that evidence and insights elicited through commissioning cycles are informing Budget decision-making. Last year when the ACT Budget was delivered, an additional $20 million was provided to the non-government sector for homelessness services.
This investment was in addition to ongoing funding and directly informed by the homelessness commissioning cycle as well as advocacy and submissions.
If you are preparing a submission for the ACT Budget, or if you plan to attend an upcoming ACT Council of Social Services Budget Roundtable with the ACT Government, we encourage you to consider how a commissioning cycle may have identified or validated evidence about community needs.
Evidence obtained through commissioning cycles can inform investment decisions by government to increase, reallocate or redirect funding to better meet existing on emerging service needs, or by providing critical sustainability funding through indexation or training investment.
When this evidence is identified, developed, and validated by experts, sector partners, frontline workers and people with lived experience, Commissioners then have a valuable foundation on which to shape a budget case and guide long-term investment in the sector.
The ACT Budget will be released in the week beginning 24 June 2024.
