Getting ready for the first JACS commissioning cycle

In 2024. commissioning will begin for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice Programs, signalling the first commissioning cycle for the Justice and Community Safety Directorate (JACS).

Six (6) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander justice support programs will be the focus area for a commissioning cycle that will bring together the Aboriginal Justice Caucus, ACT Government, service providers, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, experts and people with lived/living experience from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Together, everyone will have the opportunity to explore community need and accessibility; identify service gaps and opportunities to strengthen the existing services and supports for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in potential contact or contact with the ACT criminal justice system.

Commissioning is already delivering improved services and supports in other parts of the ACT human service system, that ultimately deliver better wellbeing and life outcomes for Canberrans.

The starting point will be reflecting on feedback received from community about what is working and what is challenging. This feedback, along with a needs assessment and lived/living experiences of justice support programs will be brought together in a draft discovery document to be released in early 2024.

If you know something to include in this draft discovery, or have a lived/living experience to share please contact JACSFirstNationsJusticePrograms@act.gov.au

Working with the Aboriginal Justice Caucus and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, JACS will develop appropriate and culturally sensitive participation opportunities to support the conversations and collaborations that can reshape the justice support programs in the ACT.
