We are always listening and learning from feedback received from everyone involved in commissioning – that is how we continuously improve.
Together we could see the way we delivered services and supports to our growing community, had to change. We collaborated to develop commissioning as a practice through which we could reform and change the way government, and the non-government sector work together to support Canberrans.
Before we began commissioning, we recognised that we needed to change the human service system to better meet the needs of our growing community, but we acknowledged it would be complex and present uncertainty.
We embarked on commissioning together, directorates and non-government organisations, with a joint commitment to continuously improve how we practice commissioning.
In our first year of commissioning, your feedback helped drive more resources and advice to ensure that lived experience was informing service re-design. Your feedback also led to improvements in how we deliver commissioning engagement activities as seen through the Children, Young People and Family Services Program.
Improving communication between directorates and the sector is an ongoing focal point. In the past year we have updated this newsletter to provide more summary information, key dates, and guidance. We have also rejigged the sector in progress updates on the web and provided more detailed updates in sector engagement forums. Your feedback and data on engagement with these channels tells us you value the changes but there is more to do.
Three years into commissioning we can say it has been more challenging than we conceived. It has tested our relationships at times and required significant efforts in government and the sector to look more deeply at our service system, sector sustainability and growing community needs.
Together, directorates and the ACT Council of Social Services (ACTCOSS) have analysed input and data from the 2023 Annual Survey and the post-engagement participation surveys. Your 2023 feedback has told us a lot about how we can continue to improve commissioning as a practice and as an experience. We are now finalising improvement actions for the second Commissioning Listening Report and Improvement Action Plan – due for release soon.
Our next plan will building on the continuous improvement actions we started in 2022
