Katie Tonacia OAM

2020 - An Initiative to Raise Awareness for PTSD

Katie is the founding director of Picking Up The Peaces (PUTP), an initiative to raise awareness for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

She has volunteered her time over many years to assist others in trauma based mental health care. As a result of Katie’s work, PUTP’s mental health education program has been delivered into a number of high risk work environments. In 2011, she received a Churchill Fellowship to undertake international research into the stigma surrounding uniformed service personnel and PTSD.

In 2014, she was an Australian of the Year ACT finalist and received a Medal in the Order of Australia. She received an Australian Federal Police Service Medal in 2018 and was a Lifeline Woman of Spirit Award finalist in 2019.
