2018 - ACT Young Australian of the Year Nominee
As a passionate science communications specialist, Siân Keys has developed a free program to encourage people with intellectual disabilities to enjoy and engage with science.
The Senior Programs Officer with the National Youth Science Forum, Siân was inspired to create Scienceability for her brother Ehren, who has Down syndrome and also loves science.
Equipped with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science Communication Outreach from the Australian National University, Siân decided to apply for a National Science Week grant and launched Scienceability in 2017, Australia’s first science program run for and by people with intellectual disabilities.
Hands-on workshops explored the science of colour, air, flight, music, building and making, liquids and fluids, and were run by trained volunteer science facilitators in the lead-up to National Science Week.
This culminated in a free, open workshop where the Scienceability participants ran demonstrations and activities for the general community. Through Scienceability, Sian is challenging ideas of who can engage with science.
