Stepping up for Foster and Kinship Carers
Foster and Kinship carers are at the very heart of the care system and do an enormous job in providing love, support and stability to vulnerable children and young people. A Step Up for Our Kids will provide carers with a more equitable system of support, better information and streamlined processes, so that they can be better supported in their caring role. Some of the key changes under A Step Up for Our Kids include:
- From January 2016, support and case management for foster and kinship carers will progressively transition to ACT Together, the new service provider under A Step Up for Our Kids.
- From July 2015, new training for foster and kinship carers in ‘trauma informed care.
- From 2016, the establishment of an independent Carer Advocacy Support Service
- From 2016, extension of the carers subsidy from 18 to 21 years of age.
In July 2015, the new Carer Subsidy and Therapeutic Assessments were introduced. Further information can be found on the Carer Subsidy and Therapeutic Assessment page.
