2017-2019 ACT Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing

Update- April 2018

At the recent 3 April 2018 meeting of the ACT Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing (MACA), members considered feedback from the 5th National Elder Abuse Conference and how it may inform the MACA’s work. It was noted a recurrent theme raised at the conference was the impact of ageism in our community and its connection as an underlying factor contributing to elder abuse. Members agreed to consider strategies for addressing ageism in the review of its workplan at the next MACA meeting in June 2018.

Members have commenced a process to reflect on the first 12 months of the current MACA and consider how its three priorities – Age Friendly City, Elder Abuse and Supported Decision making are progressing. It was agreed working groups which have been formed for each of the three priorities will meet before the next MACA meeting to review MACA’s work plan in each priority area.

The Age Friendly City survey was developed by the MACA to hear the views of older Canberrans on Canberra as an age friendly city. All Canberrans are encouraged to complete MACA’s Age Friendly City Survey at https://www.yoursay.act.gov.au/ before 12 April 2018. Since the survey opened, there have been 600 responses received which is encouraging and the survey results will be used to inform future work.
