Hand Skills

Handedness means that one hand is more reliable for use across a range of skilful acts.  Handedness starts to develop around 2 – 3 years of age, but definite right or left handedness may not be established until a child is 4 – 5 years old and sometimes not even until 7 years

  • Grasping objects, e.g. picking up small objects in the fingers or holding crayons/pens
  • Manipulating objects, e.g. putting in or taking objects out of containers, unscrewing lids or turning pages of a book
  • Coordinating hand-eye movements, e.g. threading, doing puzzles, drawing, copying shapes
