Office for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs

The Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs is the leader on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs in the ACT Government, and the business unit within the Community Services Directorate that is empowered to monitor and hold business units to account on ‘Closing the Gap’. The Office provides strategic advice to the Minister for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Affairs on issues affecting Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people living in the ACT. The Office coordinates a whole-of-government approach to issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents and provides secretariat and administrative support to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body and the United Ngunnawal Elders Council.

Coordination and Engagement

The Coordination and Engagement Team is responsible for developing and supporting stakeholder engagement across Directorates; providers and community. The team draws on existing expertise, identifying gaps requiring investment in building capability and relationship building. The Team is responsible for the implementation of a number of programs within and across ACT Government Directorates, including building individual and collective cultural proficiency.

Further responsibilities include the ongoing development of the Cultural Centre, administration of a number of cultural, leadership and scholarship grants; the development and implementation of the OA&TSIA communication strategies and protocols and secretariat support for a number of committee including UNEC and the ACTPS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employees network.

Policy and Government Relations

The Policy and Government Relations Team provides strategic advice to the ACT Government on Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Affairs and is responsible for the ACT commitments under the COAG ‘Closing the Gap’ agenda and ensures that ‘Close the Gap’ policy is used as a foundation for setting the agenda for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs and servicing in Community Services Directorate (and the wider ACTPS). The team also provides policy advice across government and where appropriate supports all Directorates with the development of culturally appreciative policies and program support.
